Overview

Sexual dysfunction refers to a range of conditions that impair an individual’s or a couple’s ability to engage in satisfying sexual activity. These conditions can impact any stage of the sexual response cycle, including excitation, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Erectile dysfunction, female sexual arousal disorder, female orgasmic disorder, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), delayed ejaculation, premature ejaculation, and hypoactive sexual desire disorder are common issues. Treatments are based on the individual underlying difficulties and cover a wide range of causes, including hormone imbalances, physical and psychological variables, and medication.

What are the types of sexual dysfunction?

There are four primary categories of sexual dysfunction:
  • Desire disorders: These, including hypoactive sexual desire condition, are characterized by a lack or loss of interest in sex or sexual desire.
  • Arousal disorders: These comprise conditions such as female sexual arousal disorder and erectile dysfunction in men that affect one’s ability to become or stay physically aroused during sexual activity.
  • Orgasm disorders: These include premature ejaculation and female orgasmic disorder. They also include difficulties in reaching orgasm, experiencing delayed orgasm, or absence of orgasm.
  • Pain disorders: These include painful sexual relations, such as dyspareunia (painful sexual relations) and vaginismus (uncontrollably spasming the muscles surrounding the vagina).

    Depending on the kind, symptoms of sexual dysfunction might vary, but typically consist of:
    Desire Disorders
  • Absence of interest or desire for sexual activity.
  • decreased or nonexistent fantasies or thoughts about sex.
  • Arousal Disorders
  • incapacity to experience physical arousal during mating.
  • inability to sustain arousal.
  • Men with erectile problems or women without vaginal lubrication.
  • Orgasm Disorders:
  • postponement of orgasm onset.
  • Men who ejaculate earlier than they would have liked.
  • Pain Disorders:
  • Dysentery during sexual activity.
  • Vaginal muscular spasms that are not voluntary (vaginismus).
